After a few nice days the weather is back to cold and wet. The herb garden is in, more cucumbers, peas, beans and chard have been planted. Potatoes are growing well and the carrots are starting to sprout.
Got the arbor constructed today over the new bed. 6 feet tall, 8 feet wide and covered with mesh fencing to allow the vining veggies an easy way to grow up it. The section on the left has been planted with sugar snap peas, lemon cucumbers, purple bush beans and rainbow swiss chard Most things planted on the 17th are doing well Started another flat of seeds today
The goal was to get these 2 beds weeded and lay down some gravel under the tree. Once I got started I decided to expand the lower bed and get rid of the small walkway between them. I'll add a gravel walk between them and the garage. All the block openings will be planted with lettuce, spinach and maybe some edible flowers and herbs. All the beds are filled with fat healthy worms which is always nice to find. Will be adding compost and rock dust later this week to finish prepping the beds. Hoping to start planting summer veggies in about 3 weeks Was dreading another summer of the neighbors loud aggressive dogs snapping at us through the fence. Their children's trash blowing all over and the crap that always ended up in our yard after their weekly loud parties. Add in the lack of privacy and I often felt like I couldn't enjoy my own yard. A new fence wasn't in the budget and even if it was I'm not allowed to build the 8 ft stockade fence I'd want. This was the quick, easy and cheap solution. Its been up a few days now and its wonderful. I don't have to see their mess and the dogs aren't nearly as bad since they cant see us. I should have done this years ago Made one of the raised beds deeper on one side and added 2 rows of carrots. I purple and 1 regular. They are marked with the butterflies Spent several hours reorganizing the greenhouse, repotting some herbs and starting a lot of seeds.
Added a new raised bed. 12 feet long 2.5 feet wide. Got the first of the broccoli and cauliflower in the ground. Added lettuce seeds around them. Grow bags have purple potatoes started in them Lastly herbs (parsley, chocolate mint and pineapple sage) and strawberry plants are in the greenhouse waiting to go in the ground. Home Depot has their plants starts on sale for $2 each this week so I picked up a few things to get a jump on the season |
